מין זכר ומין נקבה
Masculine and feminine gender in Hebrew nouns
Can identify masculine and feminine nouns and use correct gender agreement
Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?
הילדה קוראת ספר.
The girl reads a book.
המכונית חדשה.
The car is new.
השולחן גדול.
The table is big.
Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?
בעברית לכל שם עצם יש מין דקדוקי: זכר (m.) או נקבה (f.). אין מין ניטרלי.
סיומות נקבה נפוצות:
| סיומת | דוגמה | תרגום |
|---|---|---|
| -ה (-a) | מורה, ילדה | teacher, girl |
| -ת (-t) | מכונית, אחות | car, sister |
| -ית (-it) | מפית, עברית | napkin, Hebrew |
| -ות (-ut) | בריאות, חירות | health, freedom |
זכר: בדרך כלל ללא סיומת מיוחדת: ספר (book), בית (house), כלב (dog).
שים לב לחריגים! שולחן (table) — זכר למרות שנראה כמו נקבה. ארץ (land/country) — נקבה ללא סיומת.
Learners assume all -ה nouns are feminine (מורה can be male teacher!), or assign gender by Latin/European logic. Some common words defy patterns: שולחן (m.), ארץ (f.), עיר (f.), יד (f.).
English speakers: no gender in English — must memorize each noun's gender. Ru/Cs speakers: gender exists but patterns differ (שולחן looks like Russian feminine but is masculine).
Common Error Patterns
Assigned wrong gender to a noun based on incorrect pattern assumption
Learn gender with each noun as a unit; use ה-prefix trick: הספר (m.) vs. המכונית (f.) — then check adjective form
Applied regular gender rule to an exception noun (e.g., שולחן, ארץ, יד)
Memorize the common exceptions: שולחן/כיסא/ספסל (m. despite looking f.), ארץ/עיר/יד (f. without -ה)
הילדה קוראת ספר.
The girl reads a book.
ילדה (girl) ends in -ה — feminine. ספר (book) has no ending — masculine.
המכונית חדשה.
The car is new.
מכונית ends in -ית — feminine. The adjective חדשה takes -ה to agree.
השולחן גדול.
The table is big.
שולחן looks like it could be feminine but is masculine — exception to learn!
