Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?

Ő tanár, de én diák vagyok.

He/She is a teacher, but I am a student.

Megyek a boltba. — Hová mégy?

I'm going to the shop. — Where are you going?

Ön is itt lakik?

Do you (formal) also live here?

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

Hungarian personal pronouns: én(I), te(you), ő(he/she/it — no gender!), mi(we), ti(you pl), ők(they). Formal: Ön + 3rd person verb. Pronouns are often omitted — verb endings show person.

Adding gender to ő (it is always gender-neutral). Using 2nd person verb with Ön.

Common Error Patterns

Using separate he/she pronouns or adding gender to ő

'Ő' is gender-neutral — it means he, she, AND it. Context determines the referent. There is no 'ő' (masc) vs 'ő' (fem) distinction.

Using 2nd person verb with 'Ön' (e.g. Ön csinálsz instead of csinál)

'Ön' is grammatically 3rd person singular despite meaning 'you (formal)'. Always use the 3rd person (ő) verb form with Ön.

Ő tanár, de én diák vagyok.

He/She is a teacher, but I am a student.

'Ő' covers he and she. 'Én' is added for contrast/emphasis here.

Megyek a boltba. — Hová mégy?

I'm going to the shop. — Where are you going?

No pronoun needed: 'megyek' = I go, 'mégy' = you go. The ending shows the person.

Ön is itt lakik?

Do you (formal) also live here?

'Ön' is the formal 'you' but takes a 3rd person singular verb — like 'Sie' in German.
