Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?

Þetta er bíll Jóns.

This is Jón's car.

Ég fer til Reykjavíkur.

I'm going to Reykjavik.

Hún er tuttugu og fimm ára.

She is twenty-five years old.

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

Eignarfall (genitive) er fjórða og síðasta fallið. Notkun:

  • Eign: Bíll Jóns. (Jón's car.)
  • Eftir til: Ég fer til Reykjavíkur. (I go to Reykjavik.)
  • Tímaorðasambönd: tuttugu ára (twenty years old)
  • Eftir vegna: vegna veðursins (because of the weather)
KynÓákveðiðÁkveðið
Karlkynhestshestsins
Kvenkynkonukonunnar
Hvorugkynbarnsbarnsins

Sérnöfn: Mannanöfn í eignarfalli: Jón → Jóns, Anna → Önnu, Ísland → Íslands.

Athugið: Eign er sett sem eignarfall á eftir: bíll Jóns (car of-Jón), EKKI *Jóns bíll (unlike English/German 'Jón's car').

Putting genitive before the noun (*Jóns bíll) instead of after (bíll Jóns). Forgetting -s ending on masculine/neuter nouns. 🇬🇧 English speakers: English 'Jón's car' = pre-nominal. Icelandic bíll Jóns = post-nominal. Opposite order!

Þetta er bíll Jóns.

This is Jón's car.

Genitive after possessed noun: bíll Jóns (car of-Jón).

Ég fer til Reykjavíkur.

I'm going to Reykjavik.

Til + genitive: Reykjavíkur.

Hún er tuttugu og fimm ára.

She is twenty-five years old.

Ára = genitive plural. Age: number + ára.
