After this module, you can...

• Recognize all 10 basic Korean vowels (ㅏ ㅑ ㅓ ㅕ ㅗ ㅛ ㅜ ㅠ ㅡ ㅣ)
• Read simple Korean syllable blocks (가, 나, 다, 한, 글)
• Greet people in Korean: 안녕하세요 (annyeonghaseyo)

Why Hangul is special

Hangul was invented in 1443 by King Sejong the Great specifically so that common people could learn to read. The consonant shapes actually represent the position of your tongue and mouth when you pronounce them! For example, ㄱ (g/k) shows the tongue touching the back of the mouth, and ㄴ (n) shows the tongue touching the front.
