Hangul was invented in 1443 by King Sejong the Great specifically so that common people could learn to read. The consonant shapes actually represent the position of your tongue and mouth when you pronounce them! For example, ㄱ (g/k) shows the tongue touching the back of the mouth, and ㄴ (n) shows the tongue touching the front.
