Es strādāju birojā.

I work in an office.

Mēs runājam latviski.

We speak Latvian.

Viņa lasa grāmatu.

She reads a book.

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

The 1st conjugation covers verbs ending in -āt, -ēt, -īt, -ūt, -t.

Learners often forget that 2nd and 3rd person forms are identical.

Es strādāju birojā.

I work in an office.

1st person singular: strādāt → strādāju (add -u to stem strādāj-)

Mēs runājam latviski.

We speak Latvian.

1st person plural: runāt → runājam (add -am)

Viņa lasa grāmatu.

She reads a book.

3rd person: same as 2nd person form — viņa lasa
