Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?

Galds ir liels.

The table is big.

Māja ir skaista.

The house is beautiful.

Brālis un māsa ir šeit.

Brother and sister are here.

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

Latviešu valodā ir divas dzimtes: vīriešu (masculīns) un sieviešu (feminīns). Nav vidējās dzimtes!

Kā noteikt dzimti? Pēc galotnes:

DzimteGalotnesPiemēri
Vīriešu-s, -is, -usgalds (galds), brālis (brālis), tirgus (tirgus)
Sieviešu-a, -emāja (māja), māte (māte)

Noteikumi:

  • Vīriešu vārdi beidzas ar līdzskani + -s, -is vai -us
  • Sieviešu vārdi beidzas ar -a vai -e
  • Dzimte ietekmē īpašības vārdu un vietniekvārdu formu

Izņēmumi: Daži vīriešu vārdi apzīmē sievietes: puisis (puisis) — vīriešu dzimte pēc formas.

Learners from languages without grammatical gender forget to match adjectives/pronouns to noun gender. 🇬🇧 English speakers: English has no grammatical gender — must memorize gender with each noun. Endings help: -s/-is/-us = masculine, -a/-e = feminine.

Galds ir liels.

The table is big.

Galds ends in -s → masculine. The adjective liels matches: masculine form.

Māja ir skaista.

The house is beautiful.

Māja ends in -a → feminine. Adjective skaista has feminine ending -a.

Brālis un māsa ir šeit.

Brother and sister are here.

Brālis (-is) = masculine. Māsa (-a) = feminine.
