Learning Goal

Can say how long something has been going on and how long ago something happened

Exam Skills:Comprensión auditivaExpresión oral

Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?

I've been living in Valencia for three years, but I came to Spain eight years ago.

Llevamos veinte minutos esperando y el autobús no llega. —¿Desde cuándo esperáis?

We've been waiting twenty minutes and the bus isn't coming. — Since when have you been waiting?

I haven't seen my cousins since my sister's wedding, and that was two summers ago now.

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

Hace a secas solo acompaña a acciones acabadas: «Empecé a trabajar allí hace tres años».

Practice Exercises
'Hace' with a present-tense verb is the single most common time error at A2: *'Estudio español hace un año'. Use 'desde hace' or 'llevo'. 🇬🇧 English speakers: 'ago' matches 'hace' for finished events, and 'for/since' roughly match 'desde hace/desde'. The trap is 'I've been waiting for ten minutes', which needs 'llevo diez minutos esperando' — a completely different structure.

I've been living in Valencia for three years, but I came to Spain eight years ago.

Both halves in one sentence: llevar for the situation that continues, hace for the event that finished.

Llevamos veinte minutos esperando y el autobús no llega. —¿Desde cuándo esperáis?

We've been waiting twenty minutes and the bus isn't coming. — Since when have you been waiting?

llevar + gerund is the everyday way to say 'have been -ing for'. The question uses desde cuándo, not *cuánto tiempo hace.

I haven't seen my cousins since my sister's wedding, and that was two summers ago now.

'Desde' + a fixed point (the wedding); 'hace' + a quantity looking back. Different tools for different measurements.
