Learning Goal

Can understand and say large numbers, prices, years and dates

Exam Skills:Comprensión auditivaExpresión oral

Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?

The rent is eight hundred and fifty euros a month, plus a hundred and twenty for the service charge.

The Spanish Constitution was approved in nineteen seventy-eight.

See you on the 6th of January, which is when the Three Kings arrive.

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

Practice Exercises
Three recurring slips: forgetting the agreement of the hundreds ('doscientos personas'), adding 'un' before mil, and reading years English-style ('diecinueve noventa y dos'). 🇬🇧 English speakers: The decimal point and the comma are swapped, which causes real misunderstandings with prices. And 'nineteen ninety-two' has no Spanish equivalent.

The rent is eight hundred and fifty euros a month, plus a hundred and twenty for the service charge.

Ochocientos agrees with the masculine euros. 'Ciento veinte' keeps the full form ciento because it is followed by another number.

The Spanish Constitution was approved in nineteen seventy-eight.

Years are read as a single whole number in Spanish. Never split into two halves the way English does.

See you on the 6th of January, which is when the Three Kings arrive.

Cardinal number in the date (el 6, not *el sexto), month in lower case. The Kings, not Father Christmas, bring the presents.
