Exam Skills:Comprensión auditivaExpresión oral

Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?

¿Cuál es tu dirección?

What is your address?

¿Quién es esa chica?

Who is that girl?

¿Cuál prefieres?

There are two T-shirts. Which one do you prefer?

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

Los pronombres interrogativos se usan solos (sin sustantivo) para preguntar:

PronombreUsoEjemplo
¿Qué?What? (general)¿Qué es esto?
¿Quién? / ¿Quiénes?Who? (person)¿Quién viene? ¿Quiénes son?
¿Cuál? / ¿Cuáles?Which one? (from a set)¿Cuál prefieres?

¿Qué? vs ¿Cuál?

  • ¿Qué es tu número? — WRONG: ¿Cuál es tu número?
  • ¿Qué + sustantivo: ¿Qué libro quieres?
  • ¿Cuál + de / verbo: ¿Cuál de estos quieres?
  • ¿Qué es...? = definition: ¿Qué es 'gustar'?
  • ¿Cuál es...? = identification: ¿Cuál es tu nombre?

Practice Exercises
Using qué instead of cuál for identification questions (*¿Qué es tu nombre? → ¿Cuál es tu nombre?). 🇬🇧 English speakers: 'What is your name?' uses 'what' but Spanish requires 'cuál' (¿Cuál es tu nombre?). Qué = definition, cuál = identification.

¿Cuál es tu dirección?

What is your address?

Cuál (not qué) for identification. Qué is for definitions: ¿Qué es una dirección?

¿Quién es esa chica?

Who is that girl?

Quién = who (singular person). Quiénes = who (plural).

¿Cuál prefieres?

There are two T-shirts. Which one do you prefer?

Cuál = which one (choosing from options). Has plural: cuáles.
