I speak to my students in Spanish.

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

Los pronombres de objeto indirecto indican a quién o para quién se realiza la acción:

PersonaPronombre OIEjemplo
yomeMe das un libro.

Practice Exercises
Confusing le (indirect) with lo/la (direct). Also omitting the IO pronoun when a prepositional phrase is present (*Doy el libro a María → Le doy el libro a María). 🇬🇧 English speakers: English word order (I give the book to her) vs Spanish pronoun doubling (Le doy el libro a ella).

Le doy el libro a María.

I give the book to María.

'Le' = to her (IO pronoun). Even when 'a María' is present, the pronoun 'le' is required!

¿Me puedes ayudar?

Can you help me?

'Me' = to me / me (IO pronoun). Before conjugated verb.

Les hablo en español a mis estudiantes.

I speak to my students in Spanish.

'Les' = to them (IO plural). Pronoun doubling: les + a mis estudiantes.
