Аялга ба өгүүлбэрийн аялга
Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?
Та сайн байна уу? ↗
How are you? (rising intonation)
Би сурагч. ↘
I am a student. (falling intonation)
МОН-гол (stress on МОН)
MON-gol (stress on first syllable)
Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?
Монгол хэлд стресс (ударение) эхний үе дээр байдаг (Hungarian-тай адил): ГАР-ын, АЗ-ын.
Өгүүлбэрийн аялга: асуулт = өгсөх аялга (rising ↗); өгүүлэмж = уруудах аялга (falling ↘). Уу/үү нэмсэн ч аялга чухал.
Common Error Patterns
Placing stress on non-first syllable (transfer from Russian/English)
Using falling intonation on questions or rising on statements
Та сайн байна уу? ↗
How are you? (rising intonation)
Questions use уу/үү particle AND rising intonation. Both together sound natural.
Би сурагч. ↘
I am a student. (falling intonation)
Statements end with falling intonation ↘ on the final syllable.
МОН-гол (stress on МОН)
MON-gol (stress on first syllable)
Word stress is always on the first syllable. This is fixed, unlike Russian/English.
