Practice Exercises
Gendered pronoun habits and register confusion. 🇬🇧 English: he/she both = тэр. та (formal) vs чи (informal) is new. 🇩🇪 German: er/sie/es = тэр. та ≈ Sie — familiar!

Common Error Patterns

Uses separate he/she pronouns (doesn't exist in Mongolian)

Mongolian has only тэр for he/she/it. Context or a noun clarifies gender.

Confuses та (formal) and чи (informal) registers

Use та with strangers, elders, professionals. Use чи with friends, peers, family.

I am a student. He/She is a teacher.

тэр covers both 'he' and 'she'. Context tells you the gender if needed.

Where are you from? (formal)

та is used for formal/polite address.

We are in Mongolia. They are in China.

бид = we, тэд = they. Note the dative-locative suffix -д (in/at) after place names.

Frequently asked questions

When is Хувийн нэр төлөөний үг used?
How is Хувийн нэр төлөөний үг formed?
What are common mistakes with
Gendered pronoun habits cause errors; formal/informal register confusion. 🇷🇺 Russian: он/она/оно must all map to тэр. No gender clues in Mongolian pronouns. 🇬🇧 English: he/she both = тэр. та (formal) vs чи (informal) is new. 🇩🇪 German: er/sie/es all = тэр. та ≈ Sie (formal) — familiar concept!
