Олон тоо: -ууд/-үүд
Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?
Номууд ширээн дээр байна.
The books are on the table.
Олон хүмүүс ирлээ.
Many people came.
Гурван сурагч ирлээ.
Three students came.
Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?
Олон тоо (Plural)
Add -ууд (back vowels) or -үүд (front vowels). After numerals, use singular! Some nouns are irregular.
- ном → номууд (books)
- хүн → хүмүүс (people, irregular!)
- гурван ном (three book — NOT номууд)
Common Error Patterns
Using plural suffix after a numeral
Regularizing an irregular plural
Номууд ширээн дээр байна.
The books are on the table.
ном (back vowel о) + -ууд = номууд (plural).
Олон хүмүүс ирлээ.
Many people came.
хүн (person) → хүмүүс (people) is an irregular plural.
Гурван сурагч ирлээ.
Three students came.
After numerals, noun stays singular: гурван сурагч (NOT сурагчууд).
