Can form questions with question words
Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?
Ce faci? Unde lucrezi?
What are you doing? Where do you work?
Câți frați ai și câte surori ai?
How many brothers and how many sisters do you have?
De ce învățați limba română? Pentru că este frumoasă!
Why are you learning Romanian? Because it's beautiful!
Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?
Question words: ce, cine, unde, când, cum, de ce, cât. Yes/no by intonation.
cât agrees in gender/number. No auxiliary needed for questions.
Common Error Patterns
Adding auxiliary verb like English 'do'
Romanian doesn't need auxiliaries: 'Unde lucrezi?', not *'Unde faci lucrezi?'
Using wrong form of cât/câtă/câți/câte
cât (m.sg), câtă (f.sg), câți (m.pl), câte (f.pl). Must agree with the noun!
Ce faci? Unde lucrezi?
What are you doing? Where do you work?
'Ce' = what. 'Unde' = where. No auxiliary verb needed (unlike English 'do/does').
Câți frați ai și câte surori ai?
How many brothers and how many sisters do you have?
'Câți' (masc. pl.) for brothers. 'Câte' (fem. pl.) for sisters. Agreement with the noun!
De ce învățați limba română? Pentru că este frumoasă!
Why are you learning Romanian? Because it's beautiful!
'De ce' = why. 'Pentru că' = because. 'Frumoasă' agrees with limba (fem.).
