Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?

Ako ay Pilipino.

I am Filipino.

Kumain ka na ba?

Have you eaten already?

Tayo na! Sabay tayo.

Let's go! Let's go together.

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

Ang mga panghalip na panao (personal pronouns) sa Tagalog ay may tatlong porma:

TaoAng (topic)Ng (possessive/actor)Sa (location/direction)
ako (I)akokosa akin
ikaw/ka (you)ikawmosa iyo
siya (he/she)siyaniyasa kanya
kami (we, excl)kaminaminsa amin
tayo (we, incl)tayonatinsa atin
kayo (you pl)kayoninyosa inyo
sila (they)silanilasa kanila

Mahalagang tandaan: Kami = we (excluding you), Tayo = we (including you). Walang ganitong pagkakaiba sa karamihang wika!

The inclusive/exclusive "we" distinction (tayo vs kami) has no equivalent in European languages.

Common Error Patterns

Using tayo when kami is needed or vice versa

Tayo = we INCLUDING the listener. Kami = we EXCLUDING the listener.

Ako ay Pilipino.

I am Filipino.

Ako = I (ang form, topic). Ay links topic to comment. Pilipino = Filipino.

Kumain ka na ba?

Have you eaten already?

Ka = you (short form of ikaw, used after verb). Na = already. Ba = question marker.

Tayo na! Sabay tayo.

Let's go! Let's go together.

Tayo = we (including you). Tayo na! = Let's go! (inclusive invitation).
