Verb เป็น (to be) for nouns — no conjugation in Thai!
I can use เป็น for nouns and zero copula for adjectives.
Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?
ผมเป็นนักเรียนครับ
I am a student.
เขาเป็นคนไทยครับ
He/she is Thai.
อาหารไทยอร่อยมาก
Thai food is very delicious.
วันนี้อากาศดีมากครับ

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?
เป็น — 'To Be' for Nouns
Thai verbs never conjugate! No am/is/are/was/were. เป็น stays เป็น for everyone, always.
Use เป็น with NOUNS: ผมเป็นครู (I am a teacher), เขาเป็นคนไทย (He is Thai)
Do NOT use เป็น with ADJECTIVES:
- ✅ เขาสวย (She is beautiful) — no เป็น!
- ❌ เขาเป็นสวย — WRONG!
Adjectives in Thai already contain 'to be': สวย = 'is beautiful', ดี = 'is good'.
Using เป็น with adjectives (เขาเป็นสวย instead of เขาสวย). Trying to conjugate เป็น for different persons.
Common Error Patterns
Using เป็น with adjectives
เป็น + NOUNS only. Adjectives already contain 'to be': สวย = is beautiful.
Trying to conjugate Thai verbs
Thai verbs NEVER change form. เป็น is always เป็น, for everyone, every tense.
ผมเป็นนักเรียนครับ
I am a student.
เป็น + noun (นักเรียน). This is correct! เป็น links subject to a noun.
เขาเป็นคนไทยครับ
He/she is Thai.
เป็นคน + nationality. คนไทย = Thai person.
อาหารไทยอร่อยมาก
Thai food is very delicious.
อร่อย is an adjective — NO เป็น! อร่อย already means 'is delicious'.
วันนี้อากาศดีมากครับ
The weather is very good today.
ดี (good) is an adjective — no เป็น needed. อากาศดี = weather is good.
