Thai Pronouns
| Thai | Meaning | Usage |
|---|---|---|
| ผม (phǒm) | I (male, polite) | Standard for men |
| ฉัน (chǎn) | I (neutral/female) | Informal, or female |
| ดิฉัน (dì-chǎn) | I (female, formal) | Formal female |
| คุณ (khun) | you (polite) | Standard polite |
| เขา (khǎo) | he/she/they | All 3rd person! |
| เรา (rao) | we / I (casual) | 'We' or casual 'I' |
Key: เขา covers he, she, AND they — like Finnish 'hän'. Thai has no grammatical gender!
Pro-drop: Pronouns are often dropped when obvious: 'ชื่ออะไร?' (Name what?) = What's your name?
Using ฉัน as a male (use ผม). Using เขา only for 'he' (it covers she/they too). Not dropping pronouns when context is clear.
Common Error Patterns
Male using ฉัน in formal context
Males should use ผม in most situations. ฉัน is for females or very informal male speech.
Thinking เขา = only 'he'
เขา covers he, she, AND they. No gender distinction in Thai pronouns!
ผมเป็นนักเรียนครับ
I am a student. (male)
ผม (phǒm) = I (male, polite). The standard male pronoun in all situations.
เขาเป็นหมอค่ะ เขาเก่งมาก
He/she is a doctor. He/she is very skilled.
เขา = he, she, OR they. No gender distinction! Context tells you which.
ชื่ออะไรครับ?
What's your name?
Pro-drop: 'คุณ' (you) is dropped. Full form would be คุณชื่ออะไร.
เราไปกินข้าวกัน!
Let's go eat together!
เรา = 'we' (inclusive). Also used as casual 'I' among friends.
