Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?

Я люблю каву, але п'ю чай.

I love coffee, but I drink tea.

Я залишився вдома, бо йшов дощ.

I stayed home because it was raining.

Вона вчиться, щоб стати лікаркою.

She studies in order to become a doctor.

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

Сполучники з'єднують слова й речення.

Сурядні (з'єднують рівноправне):

  • і / й / та — and (й після голосного: мама й тато)
  • а — and/but (зіставлення): Я читаю, а він пише.
  • але — but (протиставлення): Хочу, але не можу.
  • або — or: чай або кава

Підрядні (вводять залежне речення):

  • що — that: Я знаю, що ти правий.
  • бо — because: Я вдома, бо йде дощ.
  • щоб — so that / in order to: Вчуся, щоб знати мову.
  • коли — when; якщо — if
🇬🇧 English speakers: Ukrainian splits English 'and' into і/та (joining) vs а (contrast: 'I read, while he writes'). 'Because' = бо (mid-sentence). A comma comes before що/бо/щоб/коли/якщо.

Я люблю каву, але п'ю чай.

I love coffee, but I drink tea.

Contrast: але.

Я залишився вдома, бо йшов дощ.

I stayed home because it was raining.

Reason: бо + comma.

Вона вчиться, щоб стати лікаркою.

She studies in order to become a doctor.

Purpose: щоб.
