Question words, yes/no questions with чи, and negation with не/ні

Learning Goal

I can ask questions with question words and чи, answer with ні, and negate verbs with не using obligatory double negation.

Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?

Чи ви розмовляєте англійською?

Do you speak English?

Я ніколи не запізнююся.

I am never late.

Де ти живеш?

Where do you live?

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

Питальні слова: хто (who), що (what), де (where), коли (when), чому (why), як (how), скільки (how many), який (which).

Питання «так/ні» утворюємо інтонацією або часткою чи на початку: Чи ти готовий? = Are you ready?

Заперечення:

  • не — перед дієсловом/словом: Я не знаю. (I don't know.)
  • ні — відповідь «no»: Ні, дякую.
  • Подвійне заперечення обов'язкове: Я ніколи нічого не кажу. (I never say anything.)
🇬🇧 English speakers: no auxiliary 'do' — questions use word order/intonation or чи. And double negation is REQUIRED: 'I don't know anything' = Я нічого не знаю (lit. 'I nothing don't know').

Чи ви розмовляєте англійською?

Do you speak English?

Yes/no question with чи.

Я ніколи не запізнююся.

I am never late.

Obligatory double negative: ніколи … не.

Де ти живеш?

Where do you live?

Question word де + verb.
