Estructura de oracionesA1

Zápor s ne-

Negation in Czech using the ne- prefix on verbs, and the requirement for double (multiple) negation

Objetivo de aprendizaje

Can negate verbs with ne- and correctly use double negation with negative pronouns and adverbs

Competencias para el examen:Expresión escritaExpresión oral

Mira estos ejemplos. ¿Puedes identificar el patrón gramatical?

Nerozumím, co říkáte.

I don't understand what you're saying.

Nikdo tady nic neví.

Nobody here knows anything.

Nikdy tam nejezdím.

I never go there.

Learners from English/German backgrounds forget that Czech requires double negation; Slavic speakers may still make word-order errors. 🇬🇧 English speakers: English forbids double negation ('nobody came', not 'nobody didn't come'). Czech REQUIRES it: Nikdo nepřišel. This is the #1 negation error for English speakers.

Patrones de errores comunes

Using a negative pronoun (nikdo, nic, nikdy) without negating the verb

Czech ALWAYS requires double negation: Nikdo nepřišel (not *Nikdo přišel). Every negative word demands ne- on the verb.

Separating ne- from the verb or placing it incorrectly

Ne- is always a prefix fused to the verb: nemluvím, nerozumím. It is never a separate word.

Nerozumím, co říkáte.

I don't understand what you're saying.

Simple negation: ne- prefix attaches directly to the verb. No auxiliary verb needed (unlike English 'don't').

Nikdo tady nic neví.

Nobody here knows anything.

Triple negation: nikdo (nobody) + nic (nothing) + neví (doesn't know). All negative elements must co-occur in Czech.

Nikdy tam nejezdím.

I never go there.

Nikdy (never) requires the verb to also be negated: nejezdím. English uses only 'never' without negating the verb.
