Rod podstatných jmen

Grammatical gender of Czech nouns: masculine (animate/inanimate), feminine, neuter recognition patterns

Objetivo de aprendizaje

Can identify the grammatical gender of common Czech nouns and understand the animate/inanimate distinction

Competencias para el examen:Comprensión lectoraExpresión escrita

Mira estos ejemplos. ¿Puedes identificar el patrón gramatical?

To je nový student. (M životný)

This is a new student. (M animate)

Ta ulice je dlouhá. (F)

That street is long. (F)

Naše město je malé. (N)

Our city is small. (N)

Presta atención a las partes resaltadas. ¿Qué tienen en común?

Každé české podstatné jméno má jeden ze tří rodů: mužský (M), ženský (F) nebo střední (N). Mužský rod se dále dělí na životný a neživotný.

RodTypické koncovkyPříklady
M životnýsouhláskastudent, muž, táta
M neživotnýsouhláskadům, stůl, počítač
Ženský-a, -e, -ostžena, ulice, radost
Střední-o, -e, -íměsto, moře, náměstí

Jak poznat rod? Koncovka je nejlepší vodítko: slova na -a jsou většinou ženská, na -o střední. Slova končící na souhlásku jsou mužská — životnost závisí na významu (živé bytosti = životný).

Výjimky: táta (M živ., končí na -a), průvodce (M živ., končí na -e). Rod je třeba ověřit ve slovníku.

Learners assign wrong gender based on translation from their native language, and confuse animate/inanimate masculine. 🇬🇧 English speakers: English has no grammatical gender, so this is an entirely new concept. Learners often forget that gender affects adjective endings and verb forms.

Patrones de errores comunes

Assigned wrong gender to a noun (e.g., treating ulice as neuter instead of feminine)

Check noun endings: -a → usually F, -o → usually N, consonant → M. Verify exceptions in dictionary.

Confused animate and inanimate masculine (e.g., treating stůl as animate)

Animate = living beings (people, animals). Inanimate = everything else. This affects accusative and plural forms.

To je nový student. (M životný)

This is a new student. (M animate)

Student ends in a consonant and refers to a living being → masculine animate. Adjective nový takes masculine form.

Ta ulice je dlouhá. (F)

That street is long. (F)

Ulice ends in -e but is feminine (not neuter). The demonstrative ta and adjective dlouhá both show feminine agreement.

Naše město je malé. (N)

Our city is small. (N)

Město ends in -o → neuter. Adjective malé and possessive naše take neuter forms.
