What time is it? — It's half past two (2:30).

Vstávám ráno v šest hodin.

I get up in the morning at six o'clock.

Schůzka je ve čtvrt na čtyři.

The meeting is at a quarter past three (3:15).

Presta atención a las partes resaltadas. ¿Qué tienen en común?

Čas v češtině se vyjadřuje pomocí denních dob a hodinového času.

Denní dobaPřibližný časPozdrav
ráno6:00–9:00Dobré ráno!
dopoledne9:00–12:00Dobrý den!
poledne12:00Dobrý den!
odpoledne12:00–18:00Dobrý den!
večer18:00–22:00Dobrý večer!
noc / v noci22:00–6:00Dobrou noc!

Kolik je hodin? Odpověď závisí na hodině:

  • Je jedna (hodina). — 1:00
  • Jsou dvě (hodiny). — 2:00
  • Jsou tři / čtyři (hodiny). — 3:00 / 4:00
  • Je pět (hodin). — 5:00+

Minuty: čtvrt na (quarter past) + akuzativ číslovky, půl (half) + genitiv následující hodiny, tři čtvrtě na (quarter to) + akuzativ: čtvrt na dvě (1:15), půl druhé (1:30), tři čtvrtě na dvě (1:45).

Ejercicios de práctica
Learners confuse the half-hour system (půl druhé = 1:30, not 2:30) and the quarter-hour phrasing with accusative/genitive. 🇬🇧 English speakers: English 'half past one' refers to the PAST hour, while Czech půl druhé refers to the NEXT hour (half of the second = 1:30). This causes systematic 1-hour errors.

Patrones de errores comunes

Off by one hour when expressing half-hours (e.g., saying půl třetí for 3:30 instead of 2:30)

Půl + genitive of the NEXT hour: půl druhé = 1:30, půl třetí = 2:30. The number names the hour you're heading toward.

Wrong case in time expressions (e.g., *v šest hodiny instead of v šest hodin)

After 5+, use genitive plural hodin. After 2-4, use nominative plural hodiny. Je jedna hodina (singular).

Kolik je hodin? — Je půl třetí.

What time is it? — It's half past two (2:30).

Půl třetí = half of the third hour = 2:30. The number is in genitive (třetí). Same logic as German halb drei.

Vstávám ráno v šest hodin.

I get up in the morning at six o'clock.

Ráno = in the morning. V + accusative for time: v šest hodin (at six o'clock).

Schůzka je ve čtvrt na čtyři.

The meeting is at a quarter past three (3:15).

Čtvrt na čtyři = quarter towards four = 3:15. Na + accusative of the coming hour.
