是字句 — 是 (shì) Sentences

是 shì means 'to be' but ONLY links nouns/pronouns. It does NOT link adjectives!

PatternExampleMeaning
A 是 B我是学生。I am a student.
A 不是 B他不是老师。He is not a teacher.
A 是 B 吗?你是中国人吗?Are you Chinese?

Common error: Do NOT say *我是好 (I am good). Use 我很好 instead — adjectives use 很, not 是.

The #1 mistake is using 是 with adjectives. 是 only equates nouns. 'I am happy' = 我很高兴, NOT *我是高兴. English speakers: Overuse 是 because English 'is' works with both nouns and adjectives. Chinese splits this function. Russian speakers: Russian often drops 'to be' entirely (Я студент), so may forget 是 is needed between nouns. Czech speakers: Czech 'jsem' works like English 'am' with both nouns and adjectives, leading to 是 overuse.

我是学生。

I am a student.

我是学生 — 是 links two nouns (我 = pronoun, 学生 = noun). No article needed!

她不是医生。

She is not a doctor.

Negation: 不 goes before 是 → 她不是医生。 Never use 没 with 是.

你是中国人吗?

Are you Chinese?

Question with 吗: 你是中国人吗? — just add 吗 to the statement. No word order change!
