有字句 — 有 (yǒu) Sentences

有 yǒu means 'to have' or 'there is/are'. It is negated with 没 méi, never 不!

PatternExampleMeaning
S + 有 + O我有两个孩子。I have two children.
S + 没有 + O我没有车。I don't have a car.
Place + 有 + O桌子上有一本书。There is a book on the table.

Key rule: 有 ALWAYS uses 没 for negation (没有), never *不有. This is the only common verb with this rule at A1.

The most common error is using 不 to negate 有. Always use 没有, never *不有. English speakers: May forget the 'there is' usage (Place + 有). In English, 'have' and 'there is' are different constructions. Russian speakers: Russian uses 'у меня есть' (possession) and 'есть' (existence) — both map to 有. Negation нет → 没有. Czech speakers: Czech 'mít' (have) and 'je/jsou' (there is) are separate; both become 有 in Chinese.

我有一只猫。

I have a cat.

我有一只猫 — 有 for possession. Measure word 只 (zhī) is needed for animals.

我没有钱。

I don't have money.

我没有钱 — negate with 没有, never *不有!

桌子上有一本书。

There is a book on the table.

桌子上有一本书 — 'there is' uses Place + 有 + Object pattern.
