La diferencia entre ser y estar es una de las cosas más importantes del español. Ambos significan «to be», pero se usan en situaciones diferentes.
| SER | ESTAR |
|---|---|
| Identidad: Soy María. | Ubicación: Estoy en casa. |
| Origen: Es de México. | Estado temporal: Está cansada. |
| Profesión: Soy médico. | Emociones: Estoy contento. |
| Características: Es alto. | Salud: Estoy enfermo. |
| Material: Es de madera. | Resultado: Está roto. |
| Hora: Son las tres. | Gerundio: Estoy comiendo. |
¡Cuidado! Algunos adjetivos cambian de significado:
| Con SER | Significado | Con ESTAR | Significado |
|---|---|---|---|
| Es listo. | He is clever. | Está listo. | He is ready. |
| Es aburrido. | He is boring. | Está aburrido. | He is bored. |
| Es bueno. | He is good (person). | Está bueno. | It tastes good / He's hot. |
| Es malo. | He is bad (person). | Está malo. | He is ill. |
| Es rico. | He is rich. | Está rico. | It tastes delicious. |
Regla general: SER = permanente, esencial, inherente. ESTAR = temporal, circunstancial, resultado.
The biggest A1 challenge. Memorize the meaning-change adjectives (listo, aburrido, bueno, malo, rico). General rule: ser = permanent, estar = temporary, but there are nuances.
María es guapa. Hoy está muy guapa.
María is pretty. Today she looks very pretty.
Ser guapa = she IS pretty (inherent quality). Estar guapa = she LOOKS pretty right now (temporary impression, maybe she dressed up).
El café es bueno. El café está bueno.
Coffee is good (in general). This coffee tastes good.
Ser bueno = good quality in general. Estar bueno = tastes/feels good right now. This adjective changes meaning!
Pedro es aburrido. Pedro está aburrido.
Pedro is boring. Pedro is bored.
Ser aburrido = he IS a boring person (characteristic). Estar aburrido = he IS bored right now (temporary feeling).
