The second big group of French verbs ends in -ir and follows the model of finir (to finish). Its signature is the syllable -iss-, which appears in all three plural forms.

The three singular forms sound identical, [fini]. In the plural the double s is pronounced [s]: ils finissent [finis]. That s sound is how you hear "they" rather than "he": il finit [fini] vs ils finissent [finis].
finir - to finish, choisir - to choose, réussir - to succeed, to pass (an exam), grandir - to grow up, grossir - to put on weight, maigrir - to lose weight, remplir - to fill, obéir - to obey, réfléchir - to think it over. Several of these are built on adjectives (grand → grandir, gros → grossir), a handy pattern to recognise.
Le film finit à dix heures. - The film ends at ten. Qu'est-ce que vous choisissez, le fromage ou le dessert ? - What will you have, cheese or dessert?
A second set of very common -ir verbs is irregular and has no -iss-: partir (je pars, nous partons), sortir (je sors, nous sortons), dormir (je dors, nous dormons), and venir (je viens, nous venons). Saying *nous partissons is a typical mistake, so learn which group each new -ir verb belongs to.
