Latvian has five vowel qualities that come in short and long pairs, and the long ones are marked with a bar. English vowels also differ in length ("bit" / "beat"), but there the quality changes too; in Latvian, length alone can separate two words.

Give the long vowel real time, about twice the short one. English speakers tend to shorten unstressed long vowels: in mājā (in the house) and Latvijā (in Latvia) the final ā must still be long.
Standard Latvian has no ō letter. In native words o stands for the diphthong "uo": ola (egg), logs (window), roka (hand). In borrowed words it is a short or long "o": opera, radio.

The one English speakers get wrong is ie: it is not "ee" as in English "piece". Piens is close to "pyens", and Jāņi, the Midsummer festival, is celebrated with siers ("syers", caraway cheese) and beer.
