A handful of short words join your sentences together. Most map neatly onto English; two have a sound-based spelling change, and Spanish has two words for "but".
| Conjunction | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| y | and | Hablo español y francés. |
| e | and, before an "i" sound | padre e hijo - father and son |
| o | or | ¿Café o té? |
| u | or, before an "o" sound | siete u ocho - seven or eight |
| pero | but | Es caro, pero es bueno. |
| sino | but rather (after a negative) | No es rojo, sino azul. |
| porque | because | Estudio español porque me gusta. |
| que | that | Creo que sí. - I think so. |
Two vowels of the same sound would merge in speech, so Spanish changes the conjunction:
Both are "but", and they do different jobs:
The test: if you could say "not X but rather Y" or "not X, it's Y", it is sino. If both halves are true at once, it is pero.
English often leaves out "that": "I think (that) it's late". Spanish keeps it: Creo que es tarde. Dice que viene mañana. *Creo es tarde is not possible.
"Because" is one word without an accent, porque. The question "why?" is two words with an accent, ¿por qué?: - ¿Por qué estudias español? - Porque quiero vivir en Barcelona.

Вправи для практикиHablo español e inglés.
I speak Spanish and English.
Y → E before words starting with i-/hi-. 'Español e inglés' (not *español y inglés).
No es caro, sino barato.
It's not expensive, but rather cheap.
Sino = but rather (correcting a negative). Pero = but (contrast). *'No es caro, pero barato' is wrong.
Estudio español porque me gusta mucho.
I study Spanish because I like it a lot.
Porque (1 word, no accent) = because. Remember: por qué (2 words, accent) = why.
