Spanish marks a question twice: an upside-down ¿ where the question begins and a normal ? where it ends. And every question word carries a written accent: qué, quién, dónde, cuándo, cómo, cuánto, cuál. The accent tells you the word is asking something; without it, que means "that" and como means "I eat" or "like".
| Word | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| ¿Qué? | What? | ¿Qué quieres tomar? - What would you like (to drink)? |
| ¿Quién? / ¿Quiénes? | Who? | ¿Quién es? ¿Quiénes son? |
| ¿Dónde? | Where? | ¿Dónde vives? |
| ¿Adónde? | Where to? | ¿Adónde vas este verano? |
| ¿Cuándo? | When? | ¿Cuándo empieza la feria? |
| ¿Cómo? | How? | ¿Cómo estás? ¿Cómo te llamas? |
| ¿Cuánto/a/os/as? | How much? How many? | ¿Cuántos años tienes? |
| ¿Por qué? | Why? | ¿Por qué estudias español? |
| ¿Cuál? / ¿Cuáles? | Which? What? | ¿Cuál prefieres? |
The opening mark goes where the question itself starts, which is not always the start of the sentence: Y tú, ¿de dónde eres? Perdona, ¿dónde está el baño?
English happily ends a question with a preposition: "Where are you from?", "Who do you live with?" Spanish cannot do that. The preposition moves to the front, before the question word:
English "what" splits in two. In front of es / son, qué asks for a definition and cuál asks you to pick out one item from a set:
So "What's your name / address / email?" all take cuál. *¿Qué es tu dirección? sounds as if you are asking what an address is. In front of a noun, Spain uses qué: ¿Qué autobús va a la playa?
The question "why?" is two words with an accent, por qué. The answer "because" is one word with none, porque: ¿Por qué no vienes? - Porque tengo que trabajar.
The accent stays when the question is reported inside another sentence: No sé dónde vive. Dime cuándo llegas. English speakers drop it here because there is no question mark.

Вправи для практики¿Dónde vives?
Where do you live?
'Dónde' with accent = question word. Without accent 'donde' = where (relative clause).
¿Por qué estudias español? — Porque me gusta.
Why do you study Spanish? — Because I like it.
Por qué (2 words, with accent) = why. Porque (1 word, no accent) = because. Very common confusion!
¿Cuántos hermanos tienes?
How many siblings do you have?
'Cuántos' agrees with the noun: cuánto (masc. sing.), cuánta (fem.), cuántos (masc. pl.), cuántas (fem. pl.).
