Three Spanish question words can stand on their own, without a noun: qué (what), quién (who) and cuál (which one). The first two behave much like English; cuál takes over some of the jobs English gives to "what", and that is where learners trip.
| Pronoun | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| ¿Qué? | What? | ¿Qué es esto? - What's this? ¿Qué quieres? - What do you want? |
| ¿Quién? / ¿Quiénes? | Who? (one / several people) | ¿Quién viene a la cena? - ¿Quiénes son esos chicos? |
| ¿Cuál? / ¿Cuáles? | Which one(s)? What? | ¿Cuál prefieres, el rojo o el azul? |
Unlike English "who", quién has a plural: if you expect more than one person, ask ¿Quiénes son? - "Who are they?". The same goes for cuál / cuáles: ¿Cuáles son tus zapatos? With a preposition, the preposition comes first, never at the end: ¿Con quién vives? - "Who do you live with?"; ¿De quién es este móvil? - "Whose mobile is this?".
English uses "what is...?" for two different questions, and Spanish splits them:
So the classic English-speaker error is *¿Qué es tu nombre?. A Spaniard will understand it, but it sounds as if you are asking what kind of thing a name is. Say ¿Cuál es tu nombre?, or more naturally ¿Cómo te llamas?
When a noun follows directly, Spain uses qué: ¿Qué libro quieres? ¿Qué autobús va a la Sagrada Familia? ¿Qué hora es? In parts of Latin America you will also hear ¿Cuál libro quieres?, but qué + noun is correct everywhere.
Before de, use cuál: ¿Cuál de estos quieres? - "Which of these do you want?".
As question words, all three carry an accent: qué, quién, cuál. Without it they are different words: que "that", quien "who" in a statement. The accent stays in indirect questions too: No sé qué quieres. Dime quién viene.
