He is an engineer by profession.
Sie ist keine Ärztin, sie ist Krankenschwester.
She is not a doctor, she is a nurse.

Im Deutschen werden Berufe nach sein ohne Artikel verwendet — anders als im Englischen.
Männlich und weiblich:

| der Arzt | die Ärztin | + Umlaut + -in |
| der Student | die Studentin | + -in |
| der Koch | die Köchin | + Umlaut + -in |
Verwendung nach sein: Ich bin Lehrerin. (kein Artikel!) Er ist Arzt.
Verneinung: Mit kein: Ich bin kein Arzt. Sie ist keine Lehrerin.
Tipp: Die feminine Form endet fast immer auf -in. Manchmal ändert sich der Stammvokal mit Umlaut.

He is an engineer by profession.
Von Beruf adds emphasis. Still no article before Ingenieur.
Sie ist keine Ärztin, sie ist Krankenschwester.
She is not a doctor, she is a nurse.
Use kein/keine (not nicht) to negate professions.
