Since the metro was closed for works, we got to dinner terribly late.

"Are you coming to the concert?" "The thing is I start at seven tomorrow, so another day would be better."

He was fined for double parking; that's why he takes the bus now.

'Porque' cannot introduce a cause that comes first in the sentence — that job belongs to 'como'. It does open an answer to '¿por qué?', which is where you will hear it most. And do not confuse the three spellings: 'porque' (because), 'por qué' (why, question), 'porqué' (the reason, a noun). 🇬🇧 English speakers: 'Because it was raining, we took a taxi' is fine in English, and that transfers into the same error. English 'since/as' corresponds to 'como'.

Since the metro was closed for works, we got to dinner terribly late.

Cause first, so 'como'. With 'porque' the halves would have to be swapped.

"Are you coming to the concert?" "The thing is I start at seven tomorrow, so another day would be better."

'Es que' softens the refusal and 'así que' draws the conclusion. This is what a polite Spanish 'no' sounds like.

He was fined for double parking; that's why he takes the bus now.

'por + infinitive' gives a compact cause; 'por eso' opens the consequence in the second clause.
