주제 조사 은/는 — Topic Marker

The topic markers and are among the most important and unique features of Korean grammar. They mark the topic of a sentence — what the sentence is about.

Form:

ConditionMarkerExample
After consonant (받침)선생님 (teacher + topic)
After vowel (no 받침) (I + topic)

When to use 은/는:

  • Introducing a topic: 학생이에요. = As for me, I'm a student.
  • Contrast: 커피 좋아요. 차 싫어요. = Coffee, I like. Tea, I don't like.
  • General statements: 한국어 재미있어요. = Korean is fun (in general).

Topic vs Subject (은/는 vs 이/가):

This is the #1 grammar challenge in Korean. The key difference:

MarkerFunctionEnglish feel
은/는Topic (what we're talking about)"As for X..." / "Speaking of X..."
이/가Subject (who does the action — new info)"X is the one who..."

Tip: 은/는 often translates to nothing in English — it's a discourse marker that doesn't exist in European languages.

Learners either overuse 은/는 everywhere or confuse it with 이/가. The concept of 'topic' as distinct from 'subject' doesn't exist in European languages. 🇨🇿 Czech speakers: Czech also uses word order for information structure (topic-comment), so the concept is familiar, but the explicit particle is new.

Časté chyby

Used 은/는 where 이/가 is required (or vice versa)

은/는 = 'as for X' (known info, contrast). 이/가 = 'X is the one' (new info, identification)

Used 은 after vowel or 는 after consonant

은 after 받침 (consonant ending): 선생님은. 는 after vowel: 저는

저는 한국 사람이에요.

Jsem Korejec.

저 + 는 (téma): 'Co se mě týče, jsem Korejec.' 는 se používá, protože 저 končí samohláskou.

날씨는 좋아요.

Počasí je hezké.

날씨 (počasí) + 는 (téma): 'Co se počasí týče, je hezké.' Obecné tvrzení o známém tématu.

사과는 좋아요. 바나나는 싫어요.

Jablka mám rád/a. Banány nemám rád/a.

Kontrastní použití: 사과는 (co se jablek týče) vs 바나나는 (co se banánů týče). 는 zdůrazňuje porovnání dvou témat.

이름은 뭐예요?

Jak se jmenujete?

이름 (jméno) + 은 (téma, po souhlásce ㅁ): 'Co se jména týče, jaké je?' Standardní způsob, jak se zeptat na jméno.
