Swedish particle verbs look like English phrasal verbs: gå upp (get up), stänga av (switch off), ta med (bring along). Two things make them different. The particle is stressed, and it stays right after the verb, in front of the object.
| Particle verb | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| gå upp | get up | Jag går upp klockan sju. |
| stänga av | switch off | Hon stänger av datorn. |
| ta med | bring | Ta med paraplyet, det regnar i Malmö. |
| tycka om | like | Jag tycker om sill. |
| komma ihåg | remember | Kommer du ihåg henne? |
| känna igen | recognise | Jag kände inte igen dig! |
| hålla med | agree | Jag håller med dig. |
English lets the particle wander: "turn off the computer" or "turn the computer off", and with a pronoun it must move: "turn it off". Swedish keeps it next to the verb in both cases: Stäng av datorn. Stäng av den. - Turn it off. *Stäng den av is wrong, and so is the German pattern of sending it to the end. What can come between the verb and the particle is the subject when it follows the verb (Kommer du ihåg henne?, Idag går jag upp tidigt.), a reflexive pronoun (Han satte sig ner.) and a sentence adverb such as inte or alltid: Jag går alltid upp tidigt. Han stänger inte av tv:n. An object does not: Stäng av den, not *Stäng den av.
Because the particle carries the stress, the same words can mean two things. Hälsa PÅ mormor means "visit Grandma"; HÄLSA på mormor with the stress on the verb means "say hello to Grandma". Likewise tycka OM is "like" while TYCKA om is "think about, have an opinion about". When you read a particle verb aloud, lean on the particle.
With a modal or in the perfect, the particle simply follows the main verb: Jag måste gå upp tidigt imorgon. Har du stängt av spisen? - Have you switched off the cooker? As an adjective, the particle moves to the front and is written together: Datorn är avstängd. - The computer is switched off.

Procvičovací cvičeníUnlike a German separable prefix, the Swedish particle does NOT move to the end of the clause: Hon stänger av datorn, not *Hon stänger datorn av. It carries the stress.
