Thai points at things on three levels of distance, and it has two sets of words for it: one that stands alone ("this is...") and one that follows a noun or classifier ("this shop"). The two sets are spelled alike except for the tone mark, so they are easy to mix up in writing.
Romanisation used here: long vowels are doubled (aa, ii, ɔɔ) and the tone is marked on the first vowel letter - mid unmarked, low à, falling â, high á, rising ǎ; ph, th, kh are aspirated (with a puff of air, as in "pin"), p, t, k are not (as in "spin"), and j stands for จ.
| Distance | Standing alone | After a noun / classifier | Place |
|---|---|---|---|
| near the speaker | นี่ (nîi) this | ร้านนี้ (ráan níi) this shop | ที่นี่ (thîi nîi) here |
| near the listener, or a little away | นั่น (nân) that | ร้านนั้น (ráan nán) that shop | ที่นั่น (thîi nân) there |
| far from both, but in sight | โน่น (nôon) that over there | ภูเขาลูกโน้น (phuu-khǎo lûuk nóon) that mountain over there | ที่โน่น (thîi nôon) over there |
The standing-alone words have a falling tone (นี่ nîi, นั่น nân, โน่น nôon); the ones after a noun have a high tone (นี้ níi, นั้น nán, โน้น nóon). In fast speech the difference often blurs, but the spelling keeps them apart.
The high-tone นี้ also builds time expressions: วันนี้ (wan níi) "today", ตอนนี้ (tɔɔn níi) "now", ปีนี้ "this year". นี้ after a noun stays the same for one or many: คนนี้ is "this person" or, with พวก, พวกนี้ "these".
The matching question word is ไหน (nǎi), in the same slot: อันไหน? "which one?", ร้านไหน? "which shop?", ที่ไหน? "where?".
English has two levels, this and that; Thai has three, like Spanish este, ese and aquel or Japanese kore, sore and are. Use โน่น for something both of you can see in the distance: a temple on the hill, a boat out at sea. The demonstrative also moves behind the noun, and if the noun is counted, behind the classifier.
