विशेष चिह्न (Special Signs)
हलन्त (्) — removes the inherent अ from a consonant: क् = k (not ka). Used to form संयुक्ताक्षर (conjuncts) — consonant clusters.
Common conjuncts: क्ष (kṣa), त्र (tra), ज्ञ (gya/jña), श्र (śra), द्ध (ddha).
Nasalization:
| Sign | Name | Use |
|---|---|---|
| ं | अनुस्वार | Nasal before consonant: हिंदी |
| ँ | चन्द्रबिन्दु | Nasalized vowel: हँसना (to laugh) |
| ः | विसर्ग | Rare in modern Hindi: दुःख |
Tip: Most conjuncts are formed by joining consonants vertically or side-by-side with halant. Reading practice makes them natural over time.
Häufige Fehlermuster
Confusing ं (anusvara) and ँ (chandrabindu)
ं before consonant (हिंदी); ँ nasalizes the vowel itself (हँसना)
Cannot parse a conjunct letter
Break it down: find the halant (्) — letters before/after it form the cluster
