व्यंजन (Consonants)

Hindi has 33 consonants (व्यंजन) arranged in 5 groups (वर्ग) by articulation point, plus 4 semi-vowels and 3 sibilants.

GroupLettersPlace
क-वर्गक ख ग घ ङVelar (throat)
च-वर्गच छ ज झ ञPalatal (palate)
ट-वर्गट ठ ड ढ णRetroflex (tongue curled)
त-वर्गत थ द ध नDental (teeth)
प-वर्गप फ ब भ मLabial (lips)

Pattern: Each group has unaspirated, aspirated, voiced, voiced-aspirated, nasal. Aspiration (ख vs क) is a puff of air — critical in Hindi. Also: य र ल व (semi-vowels), श ष स ह (sibilants+h).

Failing to distinguish aspirated (ख,घ,छ,झ,ठ,ढ,थ,ध,फ,भ) from unaspirated consonants. 🇬🇧 English: English has some aspiration (p in 'pin') but it's not contrastive — in Hindi, कल (tomorrow) ≠ खल (villain). 🇩🇪 German: German lacks retroflex ट/ठ/ड/ढ/ण entirely — these require curling the tongue back.
