These are the phrases you will hear on your first day in Iceland. Several are not what a word-for-word translation from English would give you.
| Icelandic | English | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Hæ! / Halló! | Hi! / Hello! | everyday, to anyone |
| Góðan daginn! | Good morning! / Good day! | a little more formal; said during the day |
| Gott kvöld! | Good evening! | |
| Bless! / Bless bless! / Bæ! | Bye! | bless bless is very common on the phone |
| Góða nótt! | Good night! |
| Icelandic | English |
|---|---|
| Hvað heitir þú? | What's your name? |
| Ég heiti Anna. | My name is Anna. |
| Hvaðan ertu? | Where are you from? |
| Hvernig hefur þú það? | How are you? |
| Ég hef það gott, takk. | I'm fine, thanks. |
| Hvað segirðu? - Allt gott! | How's it going? - All good! |
| Gaman að kynnast þér. | Nice to meet you. |
"My name is" is a verb, heita (to be called): Ég heiti ..., not a translation of "my name". Hvernig hefur þú það? is literally "How do you have it?".
| Icelandic | English |
|---|---|
| Takk! / Takk fyrir! | Thanks! / Thank you! |
| Ekkert að þakka. | You're welcome (literally "nothing to thank for"). |
| Gerðu svo vel. | Here you are. / Help yourself. |
| Afsakið. | Excuse me (to get attention or get past). |
| Fyrirgefðu. | Sorry. |
| Takk fyrir mig. | Thank you for having me (said by a guest after a meal or visit). |
There is no everyday single word for "please". In a shop or café, add takk at the end of the request, or ask with Má ég fá ...? (May I have ...?).
| Hvað kostar þetta? | How much is this? |
| Ég ætla að fá eina með öllu. | I'll have one with everything (the classic hot-dog order). |
| Reikninginn, takk. | The bill, please. |
| Skál! | Cheers! |
Finally, forms of address: Icelanders say þú to almost everyone and call people by their first name, teachers and officials included. Using a surname with a title would sound odd rather than polite.
