اسمِ شما چیست؟

Wie heißen Sie?

اسمت چیه؟

Wie heißt du?

این فرش چنده؟

Was kostet dieser Teppich?

آیا شما در تهران زندگی می‌کنید؟

Wohnen Sie in Teheran?

Achte auf die hervorgehobenen Teile. Was haben sie gemeinsam?

A Persian question keeps the word order of a statement. There is no 'do' and no swapping of subject and verb: you either raise your voice at the end, or you put a question word in the place where the answer would go.

Romanization follows Tehran pronunciation: â is the long a, kh is the "ch" of Scottish loch, gh stands for both غ and ق, and ' marks a glottal stop.

Yes/no questions

  • ایرانی هستید؟ (Irâni hastid?) - Are you Iranian? Rising intonation, same words as the statement.
  • آیا شما در تهران زندگی می‌کنید؟ - Do you live in Tehran? آیا (âyâ) at the start marks a yes/no question in writing and formal speech; it is rare in conversation.
  • مگه (mage, spoken) shows surprise: مگه تعطیله؟ (mage ta'til-e?) - Is it closed, then?
  • A tag نه؟ (na?) asks for agreement: شیرازی هستی، نه؟ - You're from Shiraz, aren't you?

Question words

PersianRomanizationMeaningNote
چه / چیche / chiwhatچی is spoken; written prose prefers چه
کیkiwhoformal also چه کسی (che kasi)
کِیkeywhenspelled like کی (ki); context tells them apart
کجاkojâwhereکجاست؟ = where is it?
چراcherâwhyalso 'yes' to a negative question
چطورchetorhowformal چگونه (chegune)
چندchandhow many, how much+ singular noun: چند سال؟
چقدرcheghadrhow muchamounts and prices
کدام / کدومkodâm / kodumwhichکدوم is spoken

The question word stays where the answer would be: شما کجا زندگی می‌کنید؟ (shomâ kojâ zendegi mikonid?) - literally 'you where live?'. Answer: من در کرج زندگی می‌کنم - I live in Karaj.

Written and spoken

Question words fuse with 'is': چه + است = چیست (chist), spoken چیه (chie); کی + است = کیست, spoken کیه; کجا + است = کجاست in both registers.

  • اسمِ شما چیست؟ (esm-e shomâ chist?) - What is your name? (written, formal)
  • اسمِ شما چیه؟ (esm-e shomâ chie?) - What's your name? (spoken, polite)
  • اسمت چیه؟ (esmet chie?) - What's your name? (spoken, to a friend or a child)
  • این چنده؟ (in chand-e?) - How much is this? (spoken, in any shop or bazaar)

Persian uses its own question mark, ؟, mirrored to suit right-to-left text.

For English speakers

Resist moving the question word to the front and adding 'do': 'Where do you live?' is 'You where live?'. The verb still comes last. And چند takes a singular noun: 'how many books' is چند کتاب, 'how many years' is چند سال.

Mistakes English speakers make

  • آیا with a question word: *آیا شما کجا زندگی می‌کنید؟ - drop آیا: شما کجا زندگی می‌کنید؟
  • A plural after چند: *چند کتاب‌ها؟ - say چند کتاب؟
  • Mixing up کی (ki, who) and کِی (key, when) when reading; let the context decide.
  • The bookish چیست in a casual chat: correct, but it sounds like a textbook. Say چیه.

Übungsaufgaben
🇬🇧 English speakers: adding آیا to a question that already has a question word (*آیا شما کجا زندگی می‌کنید؟); moving the question word or the verb to the front as in English; a plural noun after چند (*چند کتاب‌ها instead of چند کتاب); confusing کی (ki, who) with کِی (key, when); using the written چیست in casual speech, where چیه is natural.

اسمِ شما چیست؟

Wie heißen Sie?

Written, formal register: چیست (chist) = چه + است. Polite spoken: اسمِ شما چیه؟

اسمت چیه؟

Wie heißt du?

Spoken, informal: اسمت (esmet) = your name (تو), چیه (chie) = what is.

این فرش چنده؟

Was kostet dieser Teppich?

Spoken: چنده (chand-e) = how much is it. The question word stands where the price would be in the answer.

آیا شما در تهران زندگی می‌کنید؟

Wohnen Sie in Teheran?

Written, formal: آیا (âyâ) opens a yes/no question. In conversation the same question is just تهران زندگی می‌کنید؟ with rising intonation.

کِی به مشهد می‌روی؟

Wann fährst du nach Maschhad?

کِی (key) = when, spelled like کی (ki, who). Written register with تو; spoken: کِی می‌ری مشهد؟
