ТРКИ (Тест по ру́сскому языку́ как иностра́нному) is the official Russian language exam, known in English as TORFL. Whatever level you sit, the instructions are written in Russian, and you will need a handful of classroom phrases to talk to the examiner in the speaking part.
| Russian | English |
|---|---|
| Здра́вствуйте! | Hello! (polite) |
| Спаси́бо. / Пожа́луйста. | Thank you. / Please; You're welcome. |
| Извини́те. | Excuse me. / Sorry. |
| Я не понима́ю. | I don't understand. |
| Повтори́те, пожа́луйста. | Could you repeat that, please? |
| Говори́те ме́дленнее, пожа́луйста. | Please speak more slowly. |
| Как э́то по-ру́сски? | How do you say this in Russian? |
| Что зна́чит сло́во «...»? | What does the word "..." mean? |
| Мо́жно? | May I? |
| Нельзя́. | It's not allowed. / You can't. |
| Я согла́сен. / Я согла́сна. | I agree. (said by a man / a woman) |
Two things English speakers miss. Пожа́луйста is both "please" and "you're welcome", so it answers спаси́бо. And согла́сен changes with the speaker's gender: a woman says Я согла́сна, Я не согла́сна.
Exam tasks speak to you in the polite вы imperative, usually of a perfective verb:
Read the verb first: it tells you what to do before you have understood the rest of the instruction.
