To say where something is, Russian asks где? ("where?"). The answer is a preposition plus a noun, and each preposition decides the case of the noun after it. That is the part English speakers are not used to: the preposition and the ending come as a pair.
| Preposition | Meaning | Case | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| в | in, inside | prepositional | в до́ме "in the house", в Москве́ "in Moscow" |
| на | on; at (events, some places) | prepositional | на столе́ "on the table", на конце́рте "at a concert" |
| у | by, at; at someone's place | genitive | у окна́ "by the window", у ба́бушки "at Grandma's" |
| о́коло | near | genitive | о́коло шко́лы "near the school" |
| ря́дом с | next to | instrumental | ря́дом с до́мом "next to the house" |
| ме́жду | between | instrumental | ме́жду до́мом и шко́лой |
| над / под | above / under | instrumental | над мо́рем, под столо́м |
| за / пе́ред | behind / in front of | instrumental | за до́мом, пе́ред теа́тром |
This is the question English speakers ask most, because English "at" and "in" do not map onto them. The core is physical: в is inside, на is on a surface. Beyond that, на goes with events and activities (на уро́ке, на рабо́те, на конце́рте), and with a set of places you simply learn with their preposition: на по́чте, на вокза́ле, на ры́нке, на Кра́сной пло́щади, на Байка́ле. A safe habit is to learn every new place word together with its preposition.
У means "right by" a thing, or "at someone's home": Я сейча́с у дру́га is "I'm at my friend's right now". For "at work" or "at school" use на рабо́те and в шко́ле, not у.
Watch the small changes: в becomes во before some consonant clusters (во Владивосто́ке), and a few masculine nouns take a stressed -у́ after в/на: в лесу́, на берегу́, в саду́.
