Indefinido oder Imperfecto: die Entscheidung

The central A2 contrast: completed events versus background, with the verbs that change meaning

Lernziel

Can choose between preterite and imperfect to tell a past story with events and background

Achte auf die hervorgehobenen Teile. Was haben sie gemeinsam?

This is the hardest decision at A2, and translation will not make it for you: English "I went" can be either Spanish tense. The two tenses do not report different facts. They film the same fact with two different cameras: the preterite (indefinido) cuts to the event and moves the story on; the imperfect stays with the scene and shows what was going on around it.

Preterite - the camera that cutsImperfect - the camera that lingers
A completed event: Ayer fuimos al cine. - We went to the cinema yesterday. The circumstances around it: Hacía frío y no había nadie. - It was cold and there was nobody there.
An action that moves the story forwardA description that pauses it
A number of times you can count: Fui tres veces.A habit with no count: Iba los jueves. - I used to go on Thursdays.
A marked start or end: Empezó a llover. - It started to rain.A process under way: Llovía. - It was raining.

The pattern to master: background plus interruption

Imperfect for the scene, preterite for what breaks into it:

Cenábamos tranquilamente cuando se fue la luz. - We were having a quiet dinner when the power went off. Dinner was under way (background); the power cut interrupts it (event).

English often marks the background with "was ...-ing", which helps. But English also uses the simple past for backgrounds - "It was a cold night and the streets were empty" - and Spanish still needs the imperfect there: Era una noche fría y las calles estaban vacías.

Four verbs that change meaning

With these verbs the tense does not just change the viewpoint; it changes what you are saying.

VerbImperfectPreterite
saberSabía la verdad. - I knew the truth (already).Supe la verdad. - I found out the truth.
conocerConocía a Marta. - I knew Marta.Conocí a Marta. - I met Marta (for the first time).
poderPodía hacerlo. - I was able to (I had the ability).Pude hacerlo. - I managed to do it.
quererQuería llamarte. - I wanted to call you (the intention).Quise llamarte. - I tried to call you (often without success).

And in the negative: No quiso venir - he refused to come.

A practical test

If you can follow the sentence with "and then what happened?", you are in the preterite. If the listener is still waiting for something to happen, you are in the imperfect. A closed time span also points to the preterite, however long it is: Viví diez años en Granada (it is over), whereas Cuando vivía en Granada, subía a la Alhambra los domingos sets a backdrop.

Where English speakers slip

  • Choosing by length. "For ten years" sounds long and habitual, but a closed, measured period takes the preterite.
  • Trusting siempre: Siempre iba a esa cafetería is a habit, but Siempre te quise - "I always loved you" - looks back at a closed whole.
  • Translating "would" for past habits as the conditional. "Every summer we would go to the village" is íbamos, not iríamos.

Do not translate the tense — reconstruct the speaker's viewpoint. And beware of 'siempre': 'Siempre iba a esa cafetería' is a habit, but 'Siempre te quise' is a closed period. 🇩🇪 German speakers: German has no grammatical aspect at all, so this contrast has to be built from zero rather than transferred. The plus side: no false friend to unlearn.

No pude = der Versuch scheiterte in einem Moment. No sabía = der Zustand. Ein Tausch änderte den Sinn.
