Tagalog verbs do not change for person (I eat, she eats are the same verb). What they mark is aspect: has the action started, and has it finished?
| Aspect | Meaning | kain (eat) | English equivalents |
|---|---|---|---|
| Completed | started and finished | kumain | ate, has eaten |
| Incompleted | started, not finished; or a habit | kumakain | is eating, eats, was eating |
| Contemplated | not started yet | kakain | will eat, is going to eat |
The basic form kumain also works as the infinitive and the command: Gusto kong kumain - I want to eat.
