"With" in Turkish is ile. It can stand as a separate word after the noun, or, more often, be attached as a suffix: -la / -le after a consonant, -yla / -yle after a vowel.
| Form | Example | English |
|---|---|---|
| separate word | Ali ile geldim. | I came with Ali. |
| suffix after a vowel | Ali'yle geldim. | I came with Ali. |
| suffix after a consonant | kalemle yazdım | I wrote with a pen. |
| suffix after a vowel | arabayla | by car |
The suffix follows two-way vowel harmony: otobüsle (by bus), vapurla (by ferry), annemle (with my mother).
İle often means "and" when joining two nouns, especially people: annemle babam - my mother and father. Ve is also correct, but ile is very natural here.
Pronouns take the genitive before ile: benimle (with me), seninle (with you), onunla (with him/her), bizimle, sizinle; but onlarla (with them). Benimle gelir misin? - Will you come with me? English speakers say *benle by analogy; it is heard in casual speech, but benimle is standard.
"Without" is a different suffix, -sız / -siz: şekersiz çay - tea without sugar.
