Cardinal numbers 1-100 and the noun forms after 1, 2-4, 5+
I can count to 100 in Ukrainian and use the correct noun form after 1, 2-4 and 5+.
Schau dir diese Beispiele an. Kannst du das grammatische Muster erkennen?
У мене дві сестри й один брат.
I have two sisters and one brother.
Склянка узвару коштує п'ять гривень.
A glass of uzvar costs five hryvnias.
На Святвечір на столі сім страв — і ще п'ять.

Counting in Ukrainian takes two steps: the numbers themselves, and the form of the noun that follows them. English just adds -s after anything above one; Ukrainian has three noun forms depending on the number.
| 1-10 | 11-20 | Tens |
|---|---|---|
| один, два, три, чотири, п'ять, шість, сім, вісім, дев'ять, десять | одинадцять, дванадцять, тринадцять, чотирнадцять, п'ятнадцять, шістнадцять, сімнадцять, вісімнадцять, дев'ятнадцять, двадцять | двадцять, тридцять, сорок, п'ятдесят, шістдесят, сімдесят, вісімдесят, дев'яносто, сто |
The teens are built on -надцять ("on ten"), like English "-teen". Watch the odd ones out among the tens: сорок "forty" and дев'яносто "ninety" do not follow the pattern. Compound numbers are written as separate words, tens first: двадцять один "21", сорок п'ять "45".
| Number ends in | Noun form | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| 1 (but not 11) | nominative singular | один день, одна гривня, двадцять одна книга |
| 2, 3, 4 (but not 12-14) | nominative plural | два дні, три книги, двадцять чотири години |
| 5-9, 0, and 11-14 | genitive plural | п'ять днів, одинадцять книг, сто гривень |
The rule looks at the last word of the number: 21 behaves like 1, 32 like 2, 45 like 5. The teens 11-14 go with the genitive plural, because the last word is a "-teen", not "one" or "four". So a bill in a Kyiv café reads двадцять одна гривня, двадцять дві гривні, but двадцять п'ять гривень.
Один agrees with its noun like an adjective: один стіл, одна книга, одне яблуко "one apple". Два has a feminine form дві: два брати "two brothers", два вікна, but дві сестри "two sisters". From three upwards there is no gender difference.
Age uses the same rule with рік "year": Мені двадцять один рік. Їй двадцять два роки. Йому двадцять п'ять років.
