Learning Goal

Can make negative statements and deny things

Exam Skills:ShkrimTë folur

Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?

Unë nuk flas italisht.

I don't speak Italian.

S'di ku është.

I don't know where it is.

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

Mohimi në shqip formohet me nuk (ose s') para foljes:

PohimiMohimi
Unë flas shqip.Unë nuk flas shqip.
Ai është këtu.Ai nuk është këtu.
Ne kemi kohë.Ne s'kemi kohë.

Nuk vs S':

  • Nuk — forma e plotë, përdoret gjithmonë
  • S' — forma e shkurtër, përdoret në gjuhën e folur: S'di (I don't know), S'kam (I don't have)

Kujdes: Nuk/s' vjen gjithmonë para foljes. Nuk ka ngjashmëri me anglishten ku 'not' vjen pas foljes ndihmëse.

Negation is simple: nuk/s' always goes directly before the verb. No auxiliary needed. 🇬🇧 English speakers: English needs 'do not' + verb. Albanian is simpler: just nuk + verb. No auxiliary!

Common Error Patterns

Placed nuk after the verb instead of before

Nuk/s' ALWAYS comes before the verb: nuk flas, not *flas nuk

Incorrect double negation construction

Standard Albanian uses single negation: nuk + verb

Unë nuk flas italisht.

I don't speak Italian.

Nuk + verb is the standard negation. No auxiliary verb needed.

S'di ku është.

I don't know where it is.

S' is the short form of nuk, common in spoken Albanian. S'di = I don't know.
