Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?

Miku im ësh i mirë.

My friend (m.) is good.

Shoqja ime ësh e mirë.

My friend (f.) is good.

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

Shqipja ka dy gjini: mashkullore (M) dhe femërore (F). Gjinia përcakton formën e nyjës, mbiemrit dhe përemrit.

Si ta njohësh gjininë:

MbaresaGjiniaShembuj
bashkëtingëlloreMashkullorelibër, mik, djalë
Zakonisht Fvajzë, shkoIlë, motër
-eFemërorelule (flower), nëne (mother)
-i, -aFemëroreshtëpia (house), ditëa (day)

Përjashtime të rëndësishme:

  • djalë (boy) — mashkullor, edhe pse mbaron në -ë
  • ujë (water) — mashkullor
  • emër (name) — mashkullor

Këshillë: Mësoni gjininë bashkë me emrin! Thuani: libri (me nyjë), jo vetëm libër.

Many nouns ending in -ë can be either masculine or feminine — the definite form reveals the gender (libri = M, vajza = F). 🇬🇧 English speakers: No grammatical gender in English — must learn gender for every noun. The suffix article makes gender more visible than in German.

Common Error Patterns

Assigned wrong gender to a noun

Learn nouns with their definite form to internalize gender

Used wrong linking particle (i/e) for adjective

Masculine: i mirë. Feminine: e mirë.

Miku im është i mirë.

My friend (m.) is good.

Mik (friend, M) → miku (the friend). I mirë = good (masculine adjective form with linking particle i).

Shoqja ime është e mirë.

My friend (f.) is good.

Shoqe (friend, F) → shoqja (the friend). E mirë = good (feminine form with linking particle e).
