Personal Pronouns

Personal pronouns with tu vs você distinction, a gente usage

Learning Goal

Can use personal pronouns correctly and choose between tu and você

Exam Skills:VISC-A1

Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?

Eu sou brasileiro.

I am Brazilian.

Você fala português?

Do you speak Portuguese?

A gente fala muito.

We talk a lot.

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

Os pronomes pessoais do português têm uma distinção importante: tu (informal, conjugação própria) vs você (semi-formal, conjugação de 3ª pessoa).

PessoaSingularPlural
1ª pessoaeu (I)nós (we)
2ª pessoa informaltu (you)vós (you pl., arcaico)
2ª pessoa formal/BPvocê (you)vocês (you pl.)
3ª pessoa masc.ele (he)eles (they m.)
3ª pessoa fem.ela (she)elas (they f.)

BP vs EP: No Brasil, você é o padrão para 'you' (tu apenas em algumas regiões). Em Portugal, tu é informal e você é semi-formal (o senhor/a senhora para formal).

A gente (lit. 'the people') é muito usado no Brasil como alternativa informal a nós, com verbo na 3ª pessoa: A gente fala = Nós falamos.

Practice Exercises
Mixing tu verb forms with você (tu fala* → tu falas or você fala). Using vós (archaic except in EP literature/religion). 🇬🇧 English speakers: English 'you' = tu/você/vocês — must choose formality level. 'A gente' as 'we' is confusing.

Eu sou brasileiro.

I am Brazilian.

Eu = I. Sou = am (1st person of ser). Brasileiro agrees with masculine subject.

Você fala português?

Do you speak Portuguese?

Tu takes its own conjugation: fala+s. The course writes você fala, the third-person form.

A gente fala muito.

We talk a lot.

A gente (informal 'we' in BP) takes 3rd person singular: fala, not falamos. Very common in spoken BP.
