和的用法
和 (hé) means 'and' but has a crucial limitation: it connects nouns and noun phrases only, NOT clauses or sentences.
| Correct | Incorrect |
|---|---|
| 我和你 (you and I) | *我吃饭和他喝水 |
| 咖啡和茶 (coffee and tea) | *我很高兴和他很难过 |
| 妈妈和爸爸 (mom and dad) |
Connecting nouns: 我买了苹果和橘子。(Wǒ mǎi le píngguǒ hé júzi.) — I bought apples and oranges.
For clauses, use no conjunction (just comma) or specific connectors: 我吃饭,他喝水。(I eat, he drinks.)
Other 'and' words: 还有 (hái yǒu) = 'also/and' for adding items; 又...又 (yòu...yòu) = 'both...and'.
Common Error Patterns
Used 和 to connect two clauses instead of nouns only
和 connects nouns only. For clauses, use a comma or specific conjunctions like 而, 也, etc.
我和他是朋友。
He and I are friends.
和 connects two nouns (我 and 他) as the compound subject. This is correct usage.
我喜欢猫和狗。
I like cats and dogs.
和 connects two noun objects (猫 cats + 狗 dogs). Perfect — 和 is for nouns.
我学中文,他学英文。
I study Chinese; he studies English.
Two clauses joined by comma, NOT 和. Using *我学中文和他学英文 would be incorrect — 和 cannot join clauses.
