Pinyin Initials

Mandarin has 21 initials. Most are similar to English, but the palatals (j/q/x), retroflexes (zh/ch/sh/r), and sibilants (z/c/s) need practice.

Retroflex zh/ch/sh/r and palatals j/q/x are hardest. Don't read pinyin 'q' as English 'q'.

他知道。

He knows.

zhī 知 uses zh (like English 'j' but retroflex) — different from z (≈'dz').

我吃饭。

I eat.

chī 吃 uses the retroflex ch — tongue curled back, aspirated.

请喝茶。

Please drink tea.

qǐng 请 uses the palatal q (≈aspirated 'ch' + 'ee'), not English 'kw'.
